What is the Duke of Edinburgh award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a prestigious youth achievement program designed to help young people develop essential life skills, confidence and resilience. This award will be open to individuals starting in Year 9 all the way through to Year 11, the DofE offers three levels of awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level comprises four key sections: Volunteering, Physical Activity, Skills Development and an Expedition. The school will be signing the students up to the Bronze award (Year 9) and Silver award (Year 10).

What is DofE?

The DofE program encourages participants to challenge themselves and gain valuable experiences that will aid their personal development. It is recognised by universities and employers as a testament to commitment, time management and resilience.

Award Levels

Year 9’s Bronze Award

  • Duration: Typically completed in one year
  • Requirements:
    • Two activities sections for a minimum of three months each
    • One activity section for a minimum of six months
    • Participation in a two-day, one-night practice expedition and a two-day, one-night qualifying expedition

Silver Award

  • Duration: Usually completed in six months if the Bronze award has been achieved; otherwise, completed in one year
  • Requirements:
    • Two activity sections for six months each
    • One activity section for three months
    • Participation in a three-day, two-night practice expedition and a three-day, two-night qualifying expedition

The Activity Sections Explained

Volunteering

Participants engage in community service activities that benefit others while enhancing their own wellbeing. Examples include working with local charities, litter picking or supporting elderly individuals.

Physical Activity

This section promotes healthy living through sports or physical challenges. Participants can choose from various activities such as team sports, martial arts, or fitness challenges such as going to the gym or completing 1 mile runs.

Skill Development

Participants can either improve existing skills or learn new ones over time. This could involve music lessons, arts and crafts, or learning new languages.

The Expedition

This component involves planning and undertaking an expedition that challenges participants physically and mentally while fostering teamwork. This is where the school will provide the children with off-site expeditions of varying difficulties.

Benefits of Participating

Engaging in the DofE program helps young people build self-confidence, leadership skills, teamwork abilities and problem-solving capabilities. These attributes are highly valued by educational institutions and employers alike. Additionally, participants often form lasting friendships while enjoying new experiences.

How to Get Involved

Students interested in participating should speak with their school’s DofE Lead Mr Thompson or visit the official DofE website for more information on registration processes and upcoming events.

For further details about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program at our school or any questions regarding participation, please contact our DofE Lead Mr Thompson.

Student Voice

A Google form will be sent out at the end of the qualifying expedition for student voice and feedback!
